On the way home from a frustrating day in traffic, I thought of a new way to put together a tall bike:
I welded a seatpost to the downtube of one mountain bike, and just dropped it into the seat tube of another, right where the old seat tube (the one that used to hold my butt up) used to be.
Then I drilled through the steering tube on the bottom bike, and mounted a quick-release axle.
Now the top frame is connected to the lower frame in two places:
The seat tube welded to the top frame, and the quick release axle mounted to the lower frames handle-bar headset.
I can pop the quick release skewer on the top fork, loosen the quick-release seat clamp on the lower frame, pull the chain off the top frame's chainring, and viola...
the bikes come apart!!
I'll post some pics tomorrow, when I can get some daylight shots.

Little nervous about the stress of the welding on that quick release axle... Oh well, it's only blood.

After wanting to do this for a few years, I finally got a volunteer interested. He's my girlfriend's brother, and he was visiting for a week. We finished three bikes:
a chopper
my girlfriends pretty cruiser
my first tallbike

I'll post the pictures right away.

Greetings all...sorry that this tribe has been kind of dead lately. I don't know about the rest of you, but I spent the last year or so immersed in other stuff, and haven't started a new art bike project of note lately. I have a partially completed furbike, which is just an hour or so from being rideable, but am not sure how much I love that one.

But, the good news is, recently I had a dream/vision/ whatever you want to call it...of my next highbike. It is going to be a double decker, not too tall, lamp black, and it may or may not be built with a steering wheel.

I will be careful to post photos as the build starts, and when I have days of welding or cutting I will post here so any interested parties can come and hang out and socialize in the grotto while bikes mutate. Cheers, all, and let's get into trouble, baby.

This year's annual Appetite Enhancement Ride was the first I was able to attend. It was really something! Two Rivers supplied drinks, and there was tons of food, DJ larry spinning, and a fabulous raffle. There were many art bikes, and many bikes in general. This year was hosted by the BIcycle Kitchen/Brick House gallery, and there were easily 200 people there, maybe more, and just as many bikes.
The ride set out at about noon, and snaked its way through Oak Park, Curtis Park, Land Park, and down the trail past the marina to Miller Park. I missed the party at Miller park because of Thanksgiving obligations, but i am told there was much homebrew there and much fun.
Riding through my town with so many other bicyclists was amazing...it was the closest thing to critical mass I have seen in this town, and it inspired me to see the riders, the people rushing from their homes to see us pass, and the people waving from their cars.
If you haven't gone before, keep Thanksgiving morning 2007 open, since it is such a blast.

Do any of you nice folks have access to old car parts? Have some stuff lying around that you want to dig through? Well, I have been searching for a black automotive steering wheel. Not just any steering wheel, though.
The ideal candidate is from a 60s or older vehicle, and is resin or hard plastic...no vinyl, airbags, puffy centerpieces, etc...an old school steering wheel that once the center emblem is removed, easily shows the hole where one would bolt the steering wheel to the column.

If anyone has one, let's talk about it. I am open to bartering, buying outright, or welding in trade.

Hi!

I just got back from Burning Man '06 and was googling mutant bicycles, and look what I found - a mutant bikes interest group right here in Sacramento!

I camped with Karma Chickens, where Tappan had Denizia's wonderful (!) rickshaw and I'm friends with some of the SaDa Fuegos.

My wife and I have a couple of garage sale beater bikes that we save for BM each year, and I've got a couple more dead or dying bikes I am considering using for parts to create something unusual. I've got a copy of Atomic Zombie, a gas welder and an arc welder, and DVDs of Christine and Re-Animator for inspiration!

Hope to meet y'all soon!

OK, I have been hearing all about the Turkey Run, happens each year here in Sacramento, on Thanksgiving morning. I have had to work the last couple of years, and missed it. There are always reports of lots of choppers and other mutant cycles. My mission: To find out where and when to meet, and share with all of you, so we can do this thing. If anyone KNOWS anything, feel free to share.

mutant uni

hey mutant lovers

i have this idea... to make a short-giraffe unicycle geared high (for a uni) for crusiing

check out the pic on the tribe photo gallery --
i am pretty good at chopping and welding in photoshop, but i know very little about real welding/chopping.. do you think this project could actually start rolling? can that part of the bike support a vertical load? can a seat post (perhaps the downtube from the chopped frame) be sucessfully welded to the bottom braket deal?

as far as grearing goes.. i would use a fixed gear on the wheel that is slightly smaller than the crank under my feet.. i've ridden a 36" wheel http://www.bikemania.biz/The_Big_One_Coker_Unicycle_p/coker_thebigone.htm
so i can gear it to feel similar... but.. perhaps not as big because of the giraffe factor (i will be riding higher than i would be on a that uni)....

whatcha think?

This winter, I plan to build up a side by side tandem frame I am getting, make a junior sized tallbike out of kids' frames, and a full suspension highbike. I will be welding a lot this winter, so if anyone wants to join in on a work night, or watch the work in progress, you are all welcome. I will post pics as they come available.

Hello, all! This tribe has been dead, as Burning Man is eating my brain. I have been devoting my time to readying myself and my home for my departure, so no bike projects are happening now.
This fall and winter, let's keep warm by the glow of welding torches and cutting tools, and enjoy the hookah together.

Long live the mutant bike tribe.

PS...those of you who are not going to burning man, please write about your bikes...we need you!

A couple pieces of news...I want to postpone the weld in until I get my own Lincoln wire feed welder. The stick welder is problematic for newbies, and I don't want to frustrate you all needlessly.
Also, the highbike is all welded and ready to assemble. I will take some pictures and post them soon.
I am hoping to be able to test ride it this week! yahoo....

I picked up 9, that's NINE, bikes at the davis bike auction. This brings my body count up to fifteen parts bikes! (I hold the record for this year's cheapest bike at the auction, one dollar.

I'm in the process of trying to build a tandem for me and my girlfriend, so there goes a few bikes right there. But that still leaves me with plenty to share.

If we do have a get-together for choppin, I've got parts for swappin.

Hello, all...
In a fit of "damn, I need to get off my ass and DO something, I started another highbike today.
I found two complete frames in the basement, a Specialized mountain bike for the bottom and a Really Old Crappy ladies' bike frame for the top.
I stripped the specialized of all brake and derailleur hardware, wheels, seat, handlebars, etc.
The ladies frame was stripped of all parts except for handlebars, some minor welding was done to add a steering tube, and I worked out how it will fit onto the bottom bike.
I ran out of gas, so I will do more on Monday, as well as snap some pics of the work in progress.
Thank you all for your support.

PS, is anyone else laying waste to any bike metal?

hey mutant fans

i purchased a bike to be mutated...

its a vintage schwinn stingray (cruiser style).
The guy who had it before me converted it to a 10 speed by slopping on various components that dont really fit w/ the bike. For intsance, when i use the quick release on the back tire i can pop off the rear derailer!! and on top of that.. he ran wires for the brakes/gears across the beautiful curves of the bike frame..

i'll post pictures of my purchase as soon as i take them!

yay! first mutant here i come!

Bring food and drink, and a vision.

I just wrapped the chopper in RED long life, high light Cool Neon wire. It looks gorgeous.
Foolishly I moved the bike in the van, and crimped the wire...so sad that one section doesn't work anymore and will have to be fixed.
So, what have we learned?
Electroluminescent wire is delicate, and you shouldn't lean it against anything hard enough to pinch the core of the wire.
So, I am out some wire, but as Dave says, "That's TUITION, baby!"

Tell me your weird bike ideas

I am considering my next mutant bike project, and need your input for inspiration.
Idea 1, a high bike with a small teen or large kids bike on top
Idea 2, a high trike with curving lines, ala Dr. Seuss.

Tell me what you think. I love hearing other weirdos' minds at work.

Maybe you have been to Burning Man...maybe you are lucky enough to have a mutant cycle or know someone who does. Maybe you are lucky enough to have ridden a highbike or gone to a Cyclecide or CHUNK 666 event, and want to make your own. No matter what your interest in mutant bikes is, welcome! I find that Sacramento has a real shortage of interesting cyclitude, and I want this to be the first step in changing that!
Welcome, and long live the mutant cycle.

The Ass Punisher

It all started at the bike shop, as I shopped for the perfect seat for my mutant chopper. I knew it had to be a banana seat because of the coolness factor, and because the design of the chopper demanded it. I saw the perfect one, it was a long banana seat, with sturdy metal framework underneath, all hardware included, and cool red wavy velvet fabric.
So, cut to several weeks later, when I assemble the bike, get it all ready, and ride it for the first time.
What a feeling, to climb onto the chopper and ride it down my street for the first time! It looks totally cool, and all of the little black and mexican kids on my block came pouring out of their houses on feet and bikes to say "Damn, what is that thing? That is HECKA TIGHT!" and ride along next to me on the street.
The only thing lessening my enjoyment of this moment is the persistent pain in my ass.
Seems that the banana seat was engineered for someone whose ass wasn't as large and succulent as mine, and the metal frame was rubbing right against my sit-bones in a most unsettling way that nearly brought me to tears.
I finished my ride of triumph around the block, got off my bike, and limped back to the garage.
Now, I have devised a sort of extra cushion idea that will incorporate a custome sewn pillow made of some pimp fabric and will attach directly to the top of the banana seat with velcro or something like that.
After all, a girl has to ride in comfort...and a girl who makes her own bikes has to gain solutions to these painful dilemmas on her own.

I finally finished it Christmas eve! It rolls, it stops, it turns, it rocks!
It is black with gold paint splatters, and a purple brocade seat.
Pics to come...

Today I totally disassembled the bike to prepare for sanding and finishing. The forks are done, save for some cosmetic bondo work that Dave and I discussed. I am going to attempt to restore the original Raleigh Bicycles, Nottingham England headtube plate and put it back on. Work has been slow due to lack of energy and mysterious cold-like symptoms.

Welding, motherf**kers!

Work on the chopper goes along. I welded the forks last week, but since I am a novice welder at best, and have never welded tube steel before, I made some ugly ass welds and burned a big hole in one spot. SO...this week, I cut off the affected area (you know, like a wart) and do it again. When I am done, I will have the sickest chopper in Sacramento, and will probably wipe out and break my parts. Pictures to follow as soon as I download them from Dave's camera.
