Quick-release death forks!

I drilled through the old handle bar stem, and welded a quick-release axle with a couple quick tack-welds. Now a skewer holds the upper bike's forks to the lower bike.
I'm concerned about the heat-stress introduced by welding. If that axle snaps, I'm gonna make a funny sound before I hit the pavement.
